Diamond Terminolgy You Should Know To Find The Best Diamond For You

Diamond terminology can be overwhelming. However, you need to speak the language in order to get the best diamond for you. There is a lot to diamond terminology in addition to the more well-known 4C’s of a diamond: Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color.

When you are familiar with the terminology that describes the various parts of a diamond, you can avoid common cutting flaws, such as a thicker girdle, a sloping table, too few facets, or a poor cut. All these flaws affect the reflection of light from the diamond and the overall appearance of the stone. Below is a simple list of the diamond terminology that will be most helpful to you as you shop for fine jewelry.

4C’s

Carat: The carat is a unit of mass equal to 200 mg. Basically, it’s the weight of a diamond.

Cut: A diamond cut is a style or design guide used when shaping a diamond for polishing such as the brilliant cut. Cut does not refer to shape, but the symmetry, proportioning, and polish of a diamond.

Clarity: Diamond clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond. Fewer inclusions and blemishes results in a better clarity grade for the diamond.

Color: Diamond color actually refers to a lack of color. The diamond color evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is based on the absence of color. In other words, less color equals higher value.

Outside the 4C’s, these are the most important terms to grasp:

Table: The uppermost flat facet of the diamond

Crown: The sloping portion on the upper half of the diamond that angles away from the table

Girdle: The narrow rim that separates the crown from the pavilion.

Pavilion: The lower portion below the girdle, or lower half of the diamond that slopes toward the base

Culet: The tiny facet on the pointed bottom of the pavilion, which is the portion of a cut gem below the girdle

Facets: the smooth, polished planes that make up the surface of the diamond (there should be at least 58 facets)

Our Advice

The cut and shape of each diamond requires different proportions for the best appearance. If you have decided on the shape you want, be sure to investigate the specific dimensions, called ‘ideal proportions’, for that shape.
